Boy Scouts of America, Troop 56

Pohatcong Township, New Jersey

Boy Scouts of America, Troop 56 was founded in 1936 at St. James Lutheran Church in Pohatcong Township, New Jersey.

Back in 1936, the Troop Meetings were held every Thursday night but were later switched to Wednesday nights so that all the leaders could attend the monthly Boy Scout Round Table meetings. At one point, the Troop temporarily stopped meeting but started again in 1973. Over the years the Troop is proud to have had 18 Scouts reach the level of Eagle Scout, beginning with Paul Bobcock in 1963.

Today, the Scouts and Scout Leaders of Troop 56 are very active and have attended such events such as Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, Canadian Canoe Trip and hiking the Adirondack High Trail. In 2001 and again in 2005 Troop 56 had Scouts and Scout Leaders attend the BSA National Jamboree. In 2007 we had Scouts attend the 21th World Scout Jamboree in England. In 2002 and 2004 the Troop went to the BSA Florida Sea Base and in 2006 the Troop attended the 44th Scoutmaster’s Council Camporee held at West Point. Some of our yearly activities include Scouting for Food, Boy Scout Summer Camp, and the Klondike Derby.

Weekly Troop Meetings are held Wednesday evenings at the St. James Lutheran Church from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Please check the Troop Calendar for specific meeting dates and information.

Summer camp
(7/19 to 7/25) is quickly approaching and you should start thinking about what Merit Badges (MBs) you want to work on this year. Links to a complete list of MBs and and associated pre-requisites can be found below.

The first two links will provide you to information on the MBs. Please read the pre-requisites carefully. Some of them require a specific rank before you can take the MB, some require information to be typed and handed in, and some, like Personal Fitness, have a 12 week program that must be completed before you attend camp.

When choosing a MB, please give yourself enough time to complete the associated pre-requisites. Please take a look at the complete MB list as you may want to choose a MB that is required for the Eagle rank.

What to Bring to Settlers Camp

There is a new medical form that the BSA has adopted. The new form will need to be completed each year beginning in 2010. This means that each scout, and adult leader, will need a physical once per year. The old forms are still good for three years including this year. For 2010, everyone will need to use the new form which can be found here.
